Partimage is a Linux utility which saves partitions having a supported filesystem to an image file. Most Linux and Windows filesystems are supported. The image file can be compressed with the gzip / bzip2 programs to save disk space, and they can be splitted into multiple files to be copied on CDs / DVDs, … Partitions can also be saved across the network. For this tutorial I will use the systemrescuecd livecd, to boot the system and save the image to a remote share on the network. The partition I will be saving/restoring is an ntfs partition.
In this tutorial, I show how to use 3com Boot Services with Symantec Ghost, because the computers boot from the network, you do not have to visit the client computer. That is the client computer download and run the same files that would be run at the client computer when you start the computer from a Ghost Network Boot Disk. When the Ghost Multicast session is complete, the 3Com PBoot.exe utility restart the computers from the hard drive.
